Wow!
I guess I shouldn't say anything after my slight rant about RTTY on 40 Meters last night; but there is a "discussion" on QRP-L about 7.040 MHz and WSPR that is getting downright ugly. The word discussion is purposely used in quotes as there's a lot of vitriol and nastiness floating back and forth. Not a civilized discourse at all.
A black eye for QRPers, for sure.

Nastiness and vitriol in an online amateur radio discussion? You've got to be kidding me! Amateurs are gentlemen who engage in only the most rational and intelligent discourse...

ReplyDeleteLarry. I finally could take no more and unsubscribed from both of the bog QRP-L lists. If this were simply the typical meltdown that takes place on every ten days or so then so be it. But this time it's different. You can get away with murder as a QRPer so long as you use CW. I've seen postings to that same list where a guy announces that he is going to place a 100mW CW beacon on 7040 for the next 24 hours and many folks cheer him on. Here is a case of WSPR signals on 7040 and advocates for jamming that signal come crawling out from every rock. The QRP "gang" has changed considerably over the years and QRP-L has become more of a detriment than a compliment to the world of QRP in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYou don't see W0RSP, K7QO or any of the other "old guard" posting to the list anymore. They were the ones who kept the signal high. What's left now is simply the noise.
I'll just stick to the small QRP club mailing lists. They're friendlier and much closer to the main blood flow of the hobby anyway...

ReplyDeleteActually, I believe that W0RSP does post every now and then; but not often. Same with K7QO. I stay subscribed so that I can post RFTB announcements. Most of the other stuff, I hit the delete key.
