The best laid plans .......

I definitely didn't get as much done this weekend as I had hoped for. Two goals eluded me. I did not get the Jackite stand started, nor the 4 States paddle.

I DID get the shack cleaned - at least half way, there's a bit more decluttering to do. I also got that new rolling cart built. Here's a photo of the old one.

You can see that bottom left leg just collapsed. Even the Amazon envelope on top isn't happy! I don't know what caused it. I just came down the shack one day to find it that way. Here's a photo of the new one.

It's slightly smaller than the broken one, but it's a combination of metal and plastic construction, whereas the old one was entirely plastic. Don't get me wrong, the old one last some 20+ years. This one will outlive me. 

I have to admit to myself that even after I finish straightening up and de-cluttering, my shack is never going to be one of those "House Beautiful" ones like you see from time to time in publications, or on the Web.  Mine is just a very utilitarian one located in our basement, which is unfinished. It's a good thing that radio is not a visual medium, or I'd be sunk! In fact, I'm probably the only one on Earth who can tell when my shack is cluttered and when it's not!

I also went to Harbor Freight yesterday and bought a new travel case for the QMX, 4 States Tuner and the battery.

Sand colored, should keep the interior cool under the hot sun. This is the kind of case where you pluck out the foam pieces to make your equipment fit. 

I also made sure to participate in the QRP ARCI Hoot Owl Sprint. Started out on 20 Meters and heard Mark WB9HFK, all the way down in the noise - 229 maybe. I called him several times with no answer, so after tuning around just a tad more, I went to 40 Meters.

Signals were much, much better and I worked 10 QRP ARCI members in eight different states and provinces. I wish there had been more activity, but it was a holiday weekend and I guess folks either had company or were out enjoying a BBQ at somewhere other than home.

The rest of the weekend was filled with cleaning, laundry and some yardwork. Next weekend, I WILL build that Jackite stand - by hook, or by crook.

Before I go, last night I had a few free minutes and I played around with AI for just a bit. I created a W2LJ action figure.

A little chunkier than I think I am, but I shared it with my sister and she thought it was hilarious and that it did resemble me.

Not much going on besides the biggie - CQ WW WPX. I suppose I could get on the air for a while with SPARC's NJ2SP call sign. I don't think NJ2 is all that common.

I hope to get the Jackite stand built this weekend as well as that new rolling storage cart for the shack - which also needs a good straightening out.  You could take a picture of my shack and put in the dictionary next to the word "Chaos". If I can get those three things - stand, cart, declutter - accomplished this weekend, I will be a happy camper.

Memorial Day weekend, as important as it is to remember those who died defending our country, is also touted as the "Unofficial Start of Summer". Big laugh!

Monday will be the warmest day of the three. The others will be downright chilly for the end of May, and I've actually have had to wear a sweater the past three or four days. We are normally in the low 80s by now, for a high for the day. Not that great of a beach weekend. That's for sure!

Busy, busy. A lot to do!

Field Day has pre-occupied the last couple of month's worth of South Plainfield Amateur Radio Club meetings. Fortunately, we're on target and pretty much raring to go.  W2LJ on the other hand? Not so much. There are several important things that I need to get done. Fortunately, next weekend is the three day Memorial Day weekend here in the US, so I'll make the best use of the time that I can.

1) I want to construct that 4 States paddle that I purchased.

Last year, I brought my March paddle to Field Day. I'd prefer to leave both my "luxury Ferrari" keys - my Begali and my March paddles home in the shack. Not concerned about pilferage, but more of exposing either to the elements if we get really crazy weather. Last year we experienced a lot of windblown rain during a period of thunderstorms. We managed to keep the equipment dry, but it was an adventure.

2) I will be building a base for my Jackite mast holder.  In the past, I've deployed it like this:

The PVC pipe held in place by the three tie down ropes. It works quite well, but dealing with those ropes while simultaneously trying to keep the pipe upright as currently configured is quite a pain in the butt cheeks. If I had eight arms like an octopus, it would not be a problem. But I don't, so some aid is needed.  I want to build a base for it, and I purchased the PVC that I need to do that. I'll still use the tie down ropes to anchor everything in order to keep it all from being blown over, but this base idea that I have in mind will keep everything upright while I fiddle with each individual tent peg and rope. I'll post pictures next weekend, hopefully.

3) The shack needs some straightening up.  I need to do that so I can accomplish #s 1 & 2 above. I have a three tier cart thing right next to my bench that holds a lot of stuff. The cart that I had been using is old, was never the epitome of strength to begin with and now a caster has caved in and it's a wobbly, unstable mess.. I purchased this one from eBay for under $30. It actually has some metal to it and is not entirely plastic.

This should help clear up some space, because I moved everything from the old cart onto the benchtop to keep things from falling and breaking. It should come early this week.

In addition to the shack work, I need to update NJ2SP's QRZ page with our Field Day info. I also need to write and submit Field Day articles to our town's local publications. One is a print publication and the other is web based.

I also want to go through my VE paperwork for the last 12 months and want to extend invitations to Field Day to the new licensees that are relatively local to us.

Not too much to do .....right? Actually, I can work on the invitations and the news stories during the evenings this week after I get home from work and have dinner.

Finally, to end this post, a tip o' the cap and a hearty round of Congratulations have to go out to John Laney K4BAI. John, who I know from the QRP Fox Hunts, and various QRP Sprints - and, who is a stalwart participant in the NJQRP Skeeter Hunt, was elected to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame at Hamvention this past weekend.  FB, John! I can't think of a more well deserving and top notch operator than you.

The weekend of May 17th and 18th

Kind of quiet here in the US, as you might expect. After all, it IS Hamvention weekend in Xenia, Ohio. With all the hullabaloo going on there, there's not much in the way of on the air activity going on. Too many souls searching the gigantic flea market there for that "Holy Grail" bargain.

I believe the last Hamvention that I attended was in 1995. The last one before Four Days In May started. Great timing for a QRP'er .........right?  As I've stated before, if God lets me live that long 2026 will see retirement and a return to Hamvention AND my first Four Days In May. I don't have many things in my bucket list, but FDIM is one of them.

I miss the times in the 90s when a gaggle of members of the Piscataway Amateur Radio Club would make the trip to Dayton together. Those were great times! In fact, Dayton Hamvention was where I first met Marv K2VHW.

Anyway, enough chasing ghosts. Here's what's going on this weekend.

Who's Zooming who?

The countdown clock says 352 days until W2LJ punches the timeclock from this job for the last time. I have decided that my retirement gift to myself will be to attend FDIM in 2026, if God is willing. I've already contacted Brian KB9BVN about meeting up with him there. I also let Rick NK9G know that I plan to be there.

I wanted to go this year, but the job precludes it. I did sign up to watch the proceedings on Zoom, and while I'm working the tablet is going. Currently, the topic is the T-41 transceiver. This stuff is lightyears above my paygrade. I am listening, knowing that I will never have the technical expertise to even follow what these guys are talking about, much less designing and building anything like this on my own.

I've always been and always will be a "Ham & Egger" Amateur Radio Operator.. I'm hoping there will be some presentations later on the day that will not be Greek to me. I kind of doubt it though. I'm nowhere near the league that most QRP'er and FDIM'ers are in.

They're taking questions on the T-41 and I don't even understand those! And after watching the morning session I have to say .........these guys are geniuses ........I'm an appliance operator. My purpose for attending FDIM in person would be for the social aspect of it - the chance to finally meet other QRP'ers face to face that I have only known via the airwaves.

Where is May going?

Last Sunday was Mother's Day! This weekend is FDIM and Hamvention! In two weekends it will be Memorial Day here in the US and you know what that means !!!!!!! The "unofficial beginning of Summer, and of course the QRP-ARCI Hoot Owl Sprint!

About a month ago we had the Spring QSO Party and we had almost double the entries that we had in 2024. Let's do the same for the Hoot Owl Sprint! In 2024 we had 9 logs submitted via the AutoLog. Surely we can do better than that! The Sprint is ONLY an hour long and it's way more fun when we can jam as many QSOs as we can into that hour.

Cruddy conditions

When I checked into the St. Max Net last night on 40 Meters SSB, band conditions were abysmal. I could hardly hear anyone besides Net Control Station, Lloyd K3QNT. Hamclock informed me that the k Index was approaching 5 and we had had numerous flares throughout the day. Halfway through the net conditions had gotten better and I was hearing just about everyone.

Buoyed by that, I decided to give the 4SQRP Second Sunday Sprint a whirl. I only heard one very weak station around 14.060 MHz and could not make them out clearly. Conversations this morning in the io.group lead me to believe that was more than likely Mark WB9HFK, based on reports from other participants. I certainly couldn't make him out. I called "CQ 4S" for about 10 minutes or so with no takers. The RBN map for last night is way more impressive than reality. I was being heard, but was not being answered.  That happens some times.

Thinking that 40 Meters would be the better choice, I went back there. Wall to wall SST stations! I did not hear a single 4 States station. I sent an e-mail to the group this morning and found out that most of them hang out around 7.0122 MHz. Had I known that, I might have made a few QSOs. Better luck next month. What's that saying? "Forewarned is forearmed"?

This coming weekend is Hamvention. I am not going, as I had hoped, but next year, I should (no........WILL) be retired by then. A goal for 2026 - I desperately want to make a Four Days In May. I will be attending by Zoom this year, but it's not the same.

Thanks, Dave! I would have gone on blissfully unaware if it wasn't for you being on QRZ at just the right time.

Dave is a stalwart nightly check-in to Marv K2VHW's "Middlesex County Chat Group Net". I don't check in often enough, but enough that Dave recognized my call sign when he saw it. Dave is an "All-around Ham" who is active on HF/VHF/UHF. He has talked about his G90 and going on POTA activations. 

I'm sure the image of my QSL card was just a random pick by some computer algorithm, but it was nice to see, anyway.

The countdown begins

You may have noticed the countdown clock to the right. Yesterday marked the completion of my 68th trip around the Sun. I have made the decision that if "God is willing, and the creek don't rise" that my retirement will begin on my 69th birthday, next May 3rd. I've informed my supervisors at work, so that they have ample time to find a replacement. When I was on-boarded with this current contractor, it seemed to take forever, so i'm thinking even a year might not be enough at the speed with which they move. But that would be their problem, and not mine.

Yesterday, the South Plainfield Police Department DID hold their 2nd Annual Cops and Bobbers Fishing Derby t Spring Lake Park. Predictions fora rainy day did not come to fruition, and it turned out to be quite the opposite, with bright sunshine with temperatures making it into the 80s.

Our new CERT trailer made it's debut, as a large tackle box! It was loaded with rods and reels for kids to use who wanted to fish, but couldn't afford equipment. Marv K2VHW, Bill KC2PLO and myself were on CERT duty to direct parking cars and to keep a watchfull eye for any mishaps. Fortunately, there were no hooked ears, fingers, or faces, and no one fell into the water. In that way, we had a gratefully uneventful day.

We did have one surprise, though 

The United States Park Police made an appearance with two mounted officers. It turned out that one of the officers is a local resident and that he convinced two of his friends to come with him on their own time. They were indeed, a big hit with the kids and their parents. Everyone wanted to give the horses a friendly pat, and the horses didn't seem to mind at all 

This is not to disparage the officers, who were in full uniform. Dressed that way must make it a bit difficult to mount a horse, so they used a little step stool to do so. Of course, my brain immediately went to, "Marshall Dillon would never do that!" Just my warped sense of humor, I guess!

We wrapped up at Noon, when the tournament ended. I was pretty much wasted after getting up extra early and spending hours in the hot sun. I got the weekly grocery shopping done and just chilled for the rest of the day after that.

Myself,  I have a CERT event either Saturday or Sunday morning, which ever day has the better weather. The South Plainfield Police Dept. is sponsoring its 2nd Annual "Cops & Bobbers" event, which is a fishing tournament for the youth of our Boro, held at Spring Lake Park - the same park from which we do Field Day. Our main duties will be to make sure cars park in an orderly fashion, as there will be major spill over from the Park's tiny parking lot. We will also be watching for anyone who might fall into the lake and need assistance. Fortunately that didn't happen last year, but the grass closest to the water is in soggy mud and it gets slippery.

Occupational Hazard

One of the things about writing a blog - you get a lot of "out of the blue" e-mails. I guess that's a consequence of becoming somewhat "known". I get e-mails offering me exciting ground level opportunities to engage in marketing or distributing radios or radio related electronics products. I also get e-mails with "exciting" new product developments. Generally, I just delete these e-mails, as they are not CW or QRP related, but every now and then one comes along that is rather interesting and catches my eye.

The other day, I received one such e-mail form VGC which is an electronics company in China (of course) informing me about a newer 50 Watt VHF/UHF mobile radio for under $200. Here's the link.

I don't know if this is or ever will be FCC Type Accepted, or whether or not it's a piece of cr@p.  It's distributed here in the USA by GigaParts, so I guess it's somewhat reputable. But the one thing did intrigue me is that it is supposedly Bluetooth compatible and I guess that would allow you to program the frequencies via your smartphone, or a tablet.

I'm not in any way endorsing this product or advising anyone to buy it. Heck, for all I know, the app could be spyware. I certainly don't know if it's any good and I've never heard of this company before. The thing is that I've never heard of a radio that can be programmed via a Bluetooth compatible device before. Maybe one already exists and I'm so cooped up in my QRP CW bubble that I've never noticed it or heard of it before. Nevertheless, that's one innovation that I think would be cool to have.  Maybe the "Biggies" need to get on board with that concept.

I'm not that big into VHF/UHF, but especially in an EMCOMM situation - a radio that you could program frequencies into on the fly as needed, using your smartphone and not having to be hardwire tethered to a laptop? That would be neat!

Busy weekend

It's hard for me to believe it's Monday already! The weekend just flew by, at like SST supersonic speed! It almost feels like when I went to bed last night, it was Friday night.

As I mentioned earlier, even though QRPTTF was this Saturday, I was busily engaged elsewhere, with the 2025 Spring NJOEM CERT Workshop at the Middlesex County Fire Academy in Sayreville, NJ. I participated as a member of the Middlesex County AUXCOMM Team, not as a member of South Plainfield CERT.

There were over 200 CERT members attending from all over the state of New Jersey. I saw CERT shirts emblazoned with such organizations as Sussex County CERT, which is way up in northwest New Jersey and even Cape May CERT, which is down at the southern tip of New Jersey, a nd a lot of other places in between.

AUXCOMM was given two tasks. The first was to deploy, track and receive back the handheld radios that were used for the day, We were given 36 Tait TP9400 handhelds to disburse to each Team Lead as needed, as well as to the assorted Bureau Chiefs and VIPs. For that, we used an ICS-211e form and modified it for our needs. We recorded the radio identification number, the name of the person who it was deployed to, as well as their cell phone number. We also required the users to present a photo ID, which made recording names much easier, rather than asking them to spell their names. It was kind of loud at times, so recording names from their IDs made the task much easier. We also made notes when a radio was handed out without a speaker mic, or if we handed out a spare battery.

For the non-professional OEM people, we had to explain how to use the radio. When exactly to start talking after pressing the PTT button, how to change between talk groups if necessary, and that kind of thing.

Our other task was to log all pertinent communications on the comm channels. There were eight different talk groups altogether.  The various groups such as Logistics, Operations, Search and Rescue, County Animal Rescue Team, Medical, etc., had their own talk groups. We had to enlist several CERT members to help with the scribe duties. Marv K2VHW and I were assigned to log the Logistics talk group, in addition to taking care of radio disbursal.

It sounds like it was a lot to do; and it was, but it was not overwhelming. We couldn't log until the radios were handed out and we didn't need to log while the radios were being handed back at the end of the exercise, so the logging task filled in the downtime in between.

Receiving the radios back went rather smoothly. We just had to make sure the radios were turned off and put them back in their waterproof travelling cases - 12 radios and spare batteries to a case. Towards the end, as I was receiving back the handhelds that I was responsible for, one of the higher-ups decided to test me. He asked me which radio he had been issued before handing it back to me. I guess he wanted to see how thorough our record keeping was. I asked him what his name was, looked it up on my sheet and gave him the radio ID number. He seemed to be kind of surprised when I was able to give him the correct information. Taking care of inventorying 36 handheld radios is nothing compared to keeping track of all the laptops, desktops and other equipment under my charge here at work.  I could have done Saturday with one eye closed!

One thing about our detail that was very nice was that we were indoors at the Fire Academy for the entire workshop. Around 11:30 AM or so, it started pouring. Hard enough that we were able to hear the rain pelting the roof and a window a hundred or so feet away from our radio table. The Fire Academy is a HUGE building and in the gazillion times that I have been there, I have never heard the rain hitting the roof before. Some of the volunteers who came in for lunch between assignments were soaked. It was good to be where it was nice and dry.

Yesterday was spent recuperating from Saturday. Marianne and I went and did the grocery shopping after Mass, I did NOT have enough energy to get it done Saturday evening.  I haven't seen any chatter on the e-mail reflectors mentioning QRPTTF. I wonder how participation was,

The weekend of April 26th and 27th.

 As I posted two entries down - there is a QRPTTF re-do this weekend. However, for W2LJ, I will be involved all day in a mock earthquake drill as part of Middlesex County Emergency Management AUXCOMM, so I will not be able to participate. Besides that, the weather for tomorrow calls for an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms, so I would not be setting up in the field, even if I were not otherwise engaged.

Wow! 20 Years!

I have a routine that I adhere to every day when I get to work. When I get to my dungeon/store room/bunker office, I turn on my company laptop and log in for the day. The next thing I do is to go get a cup of water for coffee. Even though there is free coffee in the cafeteria, I don't partake, It's Starbucks coffee, which to me, always tastes burnt. Back during the pandemic, when the cafeteria was closed, I brought in a one cup coffee maker which I still use. So as I was walking over to the water dispenser, I ran into Tracy (who runs the cafeteria) and she told me that today is "Take Your Kids to Work Day".

Then it hit me like a Mack truck! It was "Take Your Kids to Work Day" back in 2005 which caused the birth of this blog! Twenty years - wow! WOW! That's a lot of typing and words! In honor of the occasion, here's a re-post of that very first one:

Take Your Kids to Work Day

This is a new experience for me. My own blog - devoted to, but not limited to Amateur Radio. This should be fun, interesting; and will hopefully also be a learning experience.

Last Thursday (4/29/05) was national "Take Your Kids to Work Day". You might be asking yourself how is this related to Amateur Radio. I'll tell you.

I belong to the Piscataway Amateur Radio Club in Piscataway, NJ. Right across the street from our meeting place is the IEEE. The IEEE is the professional association for electrical engineers. This is THE place if you are affiliated with any of the electronic fields. The wife of one of our member's works there; and approached him about the possibility of our club giving a presentation on Amateur Radio for that morning. The reasoning was, that since Amateur Radio is at least related to what the institution stands for, it just might be a good time.

We were wondering how much interest we would garner. A lot of folks out there think Amateur Radio is a dying endeavor. Maybe from the experience we had, I'm thinking the reports of our demise might be highly exaggerated.

In the weeks leading up to the event; we were told that twenty children signed up for the presentation. We were enthused. Then twenty became fifty; and then fifty became eighty and then eighty became one hundred and twenty. When the demo actually took place, a head count was taken and one hundred and seven kids attended. We were overjoyed!

There were six of us from the radio club. We started the presentation by showing the ARRL's DVD presentation of "Amateur Radio Today". This was followed by a talk by Bob Hopkins WB2UDC which included a QSO over a local 2 meter repeater and then another video. This was followed up by the kids being allowed to play with and be shown smaller presentations on Morse Code, a SSB HF station, a PSK-31 setup, and the kids even got to play with and twiddle the dials of some old Hammarlund and Hallicrafter boat anchors.

The surprise for us though, was that the hit of the day was the Morse Code displays. We had two laptops set up with Morse Midi on them; so the children could type something in and then listen to what they had typed. And we also had Morse Code practise oscillators going. We could not tear the kids away! I knew we had them hooked when one little girl had typed into the Morse Midi box; ready for translation - "This is so cool".

At the end, each participant was given either an Icom comic book; or a CQ magazine publication. We gave each a Morse Code sheet as well as a sheet we had made up listing some Websites pertaining to Marconi, crystal radios and, of course, Amateur Radio. Each kid got a QSL card with contact information to the club with an offer for tutoring, if desired. On each QSL card was a number; and for the coup de grace, we gave away a hombrewed plaque which had a Speed-X straight key to commemorate the event.

Is Amateur Radio dying; and are kids so spoiled by the Internet that our hobby is considered geeky and anachronistic? Ask any of these 107 kids and you might get a very surprising and pleasant answer!

That was a good day, and one that I will never forget! I was accompanied by Rich Pasquale W2PQ, whose wife, Peg, worked at IEEE at the time and it was she who came up with the idea. Also there was Drew Moore W2OU (SK), Bob Hopkins WB2UDC, Vic  Pennetta K2NBC and Rich Moseson W2VU of CQ Magazine fame. When we get together, we still talk about the day and how much fun it was.

The actual "birthday" of this blog is April 30th. I'll have to think of something special in order to celebrate.

My apologies for such a late notice and contributing to confusion over the  QRPTTF date.  My wife and QRPTTF partner, Jan NØQT, recently passed away in  her nursing home requiring attention and out of state travel.  Trying to  get things done post Covid, during lent and holy week and Easter was a  herculean effort.  Thank those of you expressing your condolences and  understanding.  They were appreciated more than you know.

A few of you submitted summary sheets for last weekend. THEY WILL COUNT AND BE ADDED TO THE RESULTS. Or do it again and I'll add both.

I'll be trying out my new Xiegu G90 OUTBACK, probably using my 133 ft. long   terminated folded dipole.  Weather is supposed to be 85F high, sunny and   clear, winds 20-25mph.  Typical windy and warm spring day in the desert.   Hope your weather is nice as well.

Most important is to have some QRP fun on the air regardless of where you  operate from.
