I guess
Nature did some of the demolition company's work for them.
A tornado blew the roof off the Hara Arena in Dayton last night. Taking a stroll down Memory Lane, the very first time I went to Hamvention in 1985, I remember that, after the long drive, we got to the hotel to freshen up. I put the TV on in my room and the news anchor was announcing that the local are was under a tornado watch.
Nothing came of it, but on my trips to Dayton I have seen thunder and lightning, heavy downpours, fog and even snow flurries one year. And of course, scorching sun and heat, heat, heat!

K4 photos
In an interest to keep up with the latest Amateur Radio news, here are some more photos of the K4, courtesy of the "The SWLing Post" blog:
I believe when all is said and done, you'll be looking at a minimum of around $4000.00 (US).
I guess that's what you pay for the newest, best and brightest top-of-the-line rig from a top-of-the-line company. As for me and my household, I don't think so. I'm quite happy with my KX3 and besides, I have two kids in college.
What I am interested in, though, is that Jeff Davis KE9V stated that Hans Summers from QRP Labs said that the QSX radio should be on the market in a few months. A new QRP kit that I can build for under $200? Now that's something I can sink my teeth into!

Safe travels!
Safe travels to all my friends and readers who may be travelling to Hamvention and FDIM this week.
May the weather be good, the traffic be light and may your experience be a fun and joyous one - and may the return home trip to your loved ones be safe and uneventful.
Godspeed!

Saving up!
As Hamvention weekend was coming to a close, I have decided that I am going to make my best effort to attend FDIM and Hamvention in 2018. If I put a little $$$ aside each week, I should have ample funds come the beginning of the year.
Now that my two kids are older, I really want to attend FDIM to meet as many of you as I can; as well as all the great folks I've worked over the years in the various Sprints, etc.
So, to you FDIM veterans out there - I take it that the event is still taking place at the Holiday Inn in Fairborn? When's the best time to reserve a room?

Them QRP'ers ..... they show up EVERYWHERE!
Thanks to Tom Medlin W5KUB for keeping me informed and entertained today!
Speaking of which ...... Tom is providing a great service, keeping those of us who can't make it out to Xenia informed and feeling like we're still in the mix. Traveling out there and setting up an operation like his is a labor of love ...... but it ain't cheap! If you go over to his Website and click on his "Live Video" link, you'll get a pop-up which will allow you to enter into a raffle to help defray his production costs. The prize is a really neat antenna analyzer, which I sure as heck wouldn't mind winning - so I threw a few bucks his way ..... and I hope you might consider doing the same.
By the way .......... if there are any of my regular readers at Dayton and you happen to have a picture of you, or someone you love (or even a total stranger for that matter) wearing either a Skeeter Hunt shirt, or a "QRP, when you care to send the very least!" shirt - please send me a copy!

Wish I was going to Dayton ....... err, Xenia
Maybe the better terminology would be, "Wish I was going to Hamvention" and leave it at that.
PREDICTION: Attendance will be up significantly this year as the new venue is a big draw.
New venue or old, I wish I was going. It's been 20 some years now since I last made a trek to Dayton. Various things have taken precedence - work, marriage, offspring, etc. I think the last time I was to Dayton was the final year before the switch over to May. I do miss it.
Not that I'm looking to buy anything, because I'm not. Well, at least nothing major, anyway. What I do miss is the trip out and back with local friends and meeting up with far away friends for a few days.
I'm ashamed to admit this - I've been writing this QRP and CW blog for 12 years now and I've never been to Four Days in May! How lame is that? And watch, by the time I'm able to make it, FDIM will become a thing of the past.
That's what happened with Atlanticon. The several years it was held, both Joey and Cara were in their toddler years. I could have taken time off; but my wife also works full time. With no one to watch the kids, attending Atlanticon was not a possibility. When my kids became old enough were I could have left them alone until Mom got home from work, Atlanticon had gone the way of the Dodo.
Sorry to be such a "Debbie-Downer", but I see Facebook posts of good friends making their way out to Ohio and my gray matter takes me back to Memory Land and the good times I had in days of yore. I would dearly love to meet my many QRP friends, Skeeter Hunt friends, QRP Fox hunt friends, and NPOTA friends who I have come to know, oh so well, but have never met face-to-face.
Wait a sec ...... come to think of it, I have a commitment on Saturday morning that would have precluded my going this year, even if I could.
But I still wish I could.

Change is a'comin' for Hamvention
News Press Release from today, July 29th, 2016:
On behalf of the Hamvention General Chair and the DARA Board of Directors. This is an Official Announcement concerning the 2017 Dayton Hamvention and beyond.
Dayton Hamvention® 2017 News Update
The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) regrets to inform our many vendors, visitors and stakeholders that, unfortunately, HARA has announced the closing of their facility. We have begun execution of our contingency plan to move Hamvention® 2017 to a new home. DARA and Hamvention® have enjoyed many successful years working together with HARA Arena and we wish the Wampler family the best. DARA and Hamvention® have been working on a contingency plan in the event HARA would become unavailable. We have spent many hours over the last few years evaluating possible locations and have found one in the area we believe will be a great new home!
Due to logistics and timing issues, we will make a formal announcement introducing our new partner. This information will be coming soon. We all believe this new venue will be a spectacular place to hold our beloved event. Please rest assured we will have the event on the same weekend and, since it will be in the region, the current accommodations and outside events already planned for Hamvention® 2017 should not be affected. We look forward to your continued support as we move to a new future with The Dayton Hamvention®.

Elecraft KX2
To be debuted at Dayton Hamvention:
As Eric is scheduled to do a presentation at FDIM titled “Shrinking the Multi-Mode HF Transceiver”, this kind of fits right in, eh?
Right off the bat, I see a somewhat smaller rig - to my eye, not MTR sized, but smaller than the KX3. Two bands missing, 160 Meters and 6 Meters; and I'm sure a smaller price point. A Japanese Website (http://edcjp.sblo.jp/article/175341127.html) is listing $750 as the base price - not including tuner or any other accessories.
OK. Here's a photo from Facebook that puts the size issue in perspective. It IS substantially smaller than the KX3! In fact the KX3 looks like a monster compared to the KX2. Now I understand why this is offered "factory assembled" only. This must be total SMD construction.
Very interesting. Ideal for the SOTA operator - maybe the LNR rigs were starting to cause a little diversification in the market? As of right now, my KX3 is all I need and I personally don't anticipate a need ........ but ya never know. It would be nice to have one, though. Or even have one just to play with for a while.

Wishing I was at Dayton
not so much for Hamvention itself, as that's always fun - but for FDIM.
For the newbies and those not familiar with QRP ..... FDIM is an acronym for Four Days In May. FDIM is a mini-convention or gathering of QRPers in advance of Hamvention. FDIM consists of an arrival greeting at the Holiday Inn in Fairborn, OH on Wednesday evening, followed by forums all day Thursday. Vendor Night is Thursday evening and there are get-togethers, meals, other QRP activities and QRP fellowship that occur to fill in the gaps. Hamvention itself takes up Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. FDIM closes with the QRP banquet on Saturday evening. Pretty good summation from a guy who's never been, eh?
The last time I was to Dayton was way back in 1996. FDIM inaugurated the following year, in 1997. so I missed it by a year, basically. As I previously mentioned, it takes place at the Holiday Inn in Fairborn, which is literally across the parking lot from the Homewood Suites where I used to stay the years that I did go to Hamvention. The Homewood Suites was where the AMSAT group stayed, and I was big into working RS 10/11 and RS 12/13 back in those days. (See? I have done stuff other than QRP CW operating!)
I'm getting off track here.
As part of my "QRP, You and the Great Outdoors" presentation that I gave earlier this month, I started explaining that one of the side benefits of being a QRPer is how close and tightly knit the QRP community is. FDIM would give me the chance to finally meet face to face with so many people that I have come to call friends over the years. I sorely miss the opportunity to do that, and would love to - at least just once!
Maybe, just maybe, if God is willing - next year might finally be the year. My kids are getting older and don't need Dad to be with them 24/7. If I start saving now .........

The scoop from Elecraft at FDIM
So Elecraft came to FDIM today, to announce the new K3S.
The new product is an enhanced K3 with many new features - here's a link to a .pdf which explains them all in detail. And here's a link to a FAQ.
It appears the new K3S will be approximately $500 more than the old version, and the original K3 has been "discontinued" or "replaced" - whichever you prefer. In addition, it appears most, but not all the enhancements will be retro-fittable to make a K3 a K3S. The new bezel and the attenuator, for instance, will not.
I wonder - how does the guy feel who took delivery on a brandy new K3, in the very recent past? Are they happy because they squeaked under the wire and got their K3 at the lower price? Or are they feeling a bit miffed because they ordered and received something that is no longer "the latest and the greatest"? Except for the cosmetics, it appears that you can pretty much turn your existing K3 almost into a K3S - and you do have a "system" that is continually upgradable. So if you're an Elecraft owner, you can take comfort in the fact that when you buy something, the company does its best to stand behind their product and you.
I for one, am quite happy with my KX3's. They're all the radio I need, and should Elecraft come out with a KX3S tomorrow, I would not be bothered in the least.
The morning UStream feed from FDIM was disappointing. If you attempted to watch it, you saw that only a portion of the video picture appeared and none of the audio. Basically, you missed the entire Elecraft K3S presentation. Things got straightened out during Rev. Dobb's presentation and we were able to hear that the good Reverend was inaugurated as QRP-ARCI's very first Lifetime Member.
The silver lining is that hopefully the feed will be up and running normally for the remaining sessions.

Something new from Elecraft?
Will Elecraft be introducing something new at Hamvention tomorrow? Seems like it to me. Eric and Wayne posted the following on Facebook:
Notice the use of tomorrow's date in the display. Also - the current black chassis radios in the Elecraft line are the K3 and the KX3. Both use black screws on the bezel - not silver. AND the last character before the word "Transceiver" on both radios is a "3" ...... not an "s". Lastly, there's no current radio in the Elecraft line (that I'm aware of) that has that little "down arrow" above the VFO knob.
Seems to me that a major announcement is in the offing for tomorrow. I guess time will tell!

You know it's Dayton weekend when ......
the traffic on the e-mail reflectors goes down to practically nil.
But the advent of social media, especially Twitter means that we get news and views of new equipment all that much faster.
Jeff KE9V and others have been tweeting great photos of various things all day. TJ, W0EA has been putting video log reports on YouTube.
If you can't be there, this is almost as good, thanks to the efforts of these fine gentlemen.
So far, I've seen great photos of TenTec's new Rebel, which is a dual band rig featuring open source firmware for experimentation. For comprehensive details, visit "The QRPer" - the link is to the right.
Jeff KE9V also posted images of TenTec's new auto tuner and some images of the new CrankIR portable antennas. Jeff also tweeted a mouthwatering photo of a lineup of Bengali keys.
With all the goodies available, maybe it's a good thing that I didn't make it out to Dayton. I probably would have come home a much poorer man.
I am going to get up early and take a ride to the OMARC hamfest in Wall Township, NJ tomorrow morning. It's definitely not Hamvention, but it will be fun, anyway. There's not anything that I have a real pressing need for, but it's always good to stock up on PL-259s, power connectors, and things like that. Who knows? There's always the chance to find a hidden treasure.

Hello Dayton !!!!
Are any of my readers at FDIM and/or Hamvention?
Do you have anything you'd like to share? Comments, stories, news items?
Anybody not at Dayton that wants to relate a favorite memory or anything else?
Just for this weekend, I've taken off some of the restrictions on commenting, including allowing anonymous comments - but please, give your name and call sign! (I will delete offensive or spam comments.)

This n' that
We did end up making that trip down to the Camden waterfront yesterday. There was so much to see at the aquarium, that we didn't make it to the USS New Jersey.
But after seeing it from the outside, all of us decided that we really want to go back to take the tour. That we didn't make it there yesterday may have been serendipitous, anyway. As yesterday was Armed Forces Day, the New Jersey might have been a busier place than normal. We WILL get back there this summer - somehow, someway.
Congratulations are in order to the two newest members of the QRP Hall of Fame, Terry Fletcher WA0ITP and Jay Bromley W5JAY. They both richly deserve the honor and it's good to see them inducted.
Not much news on the e-mail reflectors about new QRP items at Dayton. With the proliferation of e-mail capability via cell phones, iPads and other tablets, I was expecting more. Either there wasn't much in the way of news, or perhaps we'll start hearing more once folks get home and settled in.
I am hoping that with the Dayton dust settling that there will be good news headed my way from Aptos, CA this week, My buddy sent me an e-mail letting me know that he's closing on his house on May 31st. Looks like this horse race is going to be a photo finish.

Severe case of Dayton envy!
I really envy all of you fortunate enough to attend the Dayton Hamvention and FDIM. Looks like a bounty of good QRP stuff will be available. Doug Hendricks KI6DS, posted this to QRP-L today:
Hendricks QRP kits will be at Dayton again this year, and we will be in a new location. Our booth numbers are 459 and 460, located right across from the ARRL in the Ball Arena. And we have 9 new products, yes, you read it right, 9. Here they are:
1. The Weber Tribander designed by Steve Weber, KD1JV. This is a 3 band CW Transceiver and you get to pick your bands from the following: 15, 17, 20, 30, 40 and 80 Meters. Sounds like it's a good idea to bring lots of radio money along. Maybe it's a good thing that I'm not going? At least that's what the XYL is probably thinking.
