Ham Mag

I got a notice in my e-mail inbox that HAM MAG, the French Amateur Radio e-zine is going to no longer be a free publication. Beginning immediately, if you want to subscribe, it will cost $15.00 dollars a year.

I am not quite sure why an e-zine has to be a subscription deal; but personally, I think I am going to pass this one up. K9YA does a superb job; as does WorldRadio; and neither one of them charge a cent.

I am typing this while watching "24" - just goes to show how indispensable this Acer Aspire One has become to me. It's nice not to be tied to a desktop. Anyway, I really don't get to use the desktop that much more. My two kids are becoming more and more computer savvy and are spending time on line on Disney's "Club Penguin".

I subscribed to the first French-language, on-line e-mag. Sent a few Euros to help cover expenses. The mag is non-profit but there are expenses that must be met. The advertising revenue is minimal. My budget no longer permits contributing financially, but I understand why the editor needs some financial assistance.

I hope he and others involved manage to stay afloat.

  2. Same for me regarding Ham Mag. I read the first couple of issues but I wouldn't spend $15 for it. Hopefully they can make a go of it vs just shut down.

As for Club Penguin, my kids used to be on it constantly. It's the pre-cursor to Facebook.

  3. Larry,
Like you I am hesitant to pay a subscription and would have preferred a contribution basis, like e-ham does for premium features. I've enjoyed the ezine but not sure I would pay $15 / year for it without having a bit more of a track record. Have you read the book FREE yet? Discusses this very topic in detail...
